From February 3, Friday, the public will be able to visit the Museu da Casa Brasileira, an institution managed by the Fundação Padre Anchieta, the exhibition panel ‘Poltrona Chifruda’`. Conceived in partnership with the Instituto Sergio Rodrigues, the panel includes a copy of the armchair that will be donated to the MCB Collection, manufactured through a process that uses hand tools and traditional woodworking techniques, with Muiracatiara wood and natural leather.
The exhibition panel will present to the public the Poltrona Chifruda, a piece conceived by the architect and designer Sergio Rodrigues in 1962, for the exhibition Mobile as an art object, created by him at the OCA gallery in Rio de Janeiro, which had the participation of several architect friends by Sergio, who played a fundamental role in the construction of Brazilian architecture. For a while, professionals launched new projects, all responding to a challenge proposed by Sergio: “Make furniture!”.
At the time, the armchair drew the attention of art critics for its unusual shapes and expressive freedom. Sergio anticipated questions about the practice of design that were raised later in the context of the postmodernity debate. One of his most disruptive creations, this chair transcends the traditional link between form and function associated with the design of the time and reflects the great skill of its craftsmen in handling leather and wood, with sinuous lines, oval sections of complex machining and sophisticated fittings that distantly refer to traditional furniture and wild things.
The Museu da Casa Brasileira and the Sergio Rodrigues Institute also celebrate with the panel the beginning of a partnership that will promote several actions. For José Roberto Maluf, Director-President of the Padre Anchieta Foundation, partnerships like this are fundamental for the construction of an even more multiple Museum in its areas of operation. “The Sergio Rodrigues Institute and the Museu da Casa Brasileira will jointly promote educational actions, debates on art and design at the Sergio Rodrigues Apartment located in São Paulo, collection research and exhibition planning. The panel is just one of the first collaborative activities”, he concludes.
