The Museu da Casa Brasileira (MCB), an institution of the Secretariat of Culture of the State of São Paulo, and the Istituto Italiano di Cultura presented in São Paulo the exhibition “Vivere alla Ponti – Gio Ponti’s ways of living and working”.

Curated by Francesca Molteni and Franco Raggi, the show ran from March 1st to April 15th and covered the architectural experiences designed by the master of design and architecture in Italy in the 20th century. Videos, photographs from archives, furniture and the reproduction of unpublished drawings were exhibited. The event is part of the second edition of IDD (Italian Design Day) – Italian Design Day in the World.
Pieces Exhibited at the Show
The exhibition arrived at the MCB after passing through Milan, Rome, Venice and London, and has the support of Molteni&C., responsible for the re-edition of part of the furniture designed by Ponti. The pieces presented at the show were created between 1935 and 1970 and include armchairs, coffee tables, chairs and shelves, some used by the designer’s family. Documents and photographs on display portrayed the intimate relationship that the artist developed with his architectural projects: from the houses in Milan designed to live with his family to the Palazzo de Montecatini, which houses the famous Pirelli offices.
Records Exhibited at the Show
On February 28, the Istituto promoted the screening of the film Amare Gio Ponti, directed by Francesca Molteni. The documentary, produced in 2015, brought testimonies from the artist’s family and some of his heirs by profession, such as Vittorio Gregotti, Fulvio Irace, Enzo Mari, Giovanna and Maria Grazia Mazzocchi. Afterwards, there was a debate with Peter Hefti, responsible for the cultural activities of the Molteni Group and director of the Molteni Museum and Compound, in Italy. Another action that was part of the program was the guided visit with Peter Hefti on March 2, Friday, at 3 pm.

About Gio Ponti
Known as one of the most influential figures in Italian design, Gio Ponti was born in Milan in 1891. He has worked as an architect, industrial designer and painter. He was a professor at the Faculty of Architecture at the Polytechnic of Milan and founder of the magazines Domus (1928) and Stile (1941). He died in 1979, after nearly 50 years dedicated to the profession.

The Museu da Casa Brasileira, an institution of the Secretariat of Culture and Creative Economy of the State of São Paulo that celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2020, is dedicated to the preservation and dissemination of the material culture of the Brazilian house, being the only museum in the country specializing in architecture and design.
