In June 2018, the Museu da Casa Brasileira (MCB), an institution of the Secretariat of Culture and Creative Economy of the State of São Paulo, inaugurated the exhibition Tipos Latinos – 8th Biennial of Latin American Typography.

The opening included the lectures “Corporate Typography in the LATAM project”, by Daniel Sabino (type designer at Blackletra), and “Gerente Criativo/Interbrand”, by Gil Botari (creative manager at Interbrand). The representatives of the Latin Types Committee, Ricardo Esteves, technical coordinator, and Andrea Kulpas, a graphic designer specializing in typography, presented an overview of the entries for the 2018 edition. There was also a tribute to designer Alexandre Wollner, who would be 90 years old in 2018. The public also followed the production of posters using the typographic printing technique – pressing mobile metallic types onto paper -, which were distributed to visitors.

The initiative, co-founded by Brazil, emerged in 2004 and takes place simultaneously in 14 Latin American countries – Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Cuba, Ecuador, Guatemala, Mexico, Nicaragua, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela . Every two years, Tipos Latinos receives entries for works related to typography and selects the latest in the market. The traveling exhibition travels through several cities in each of the participating countries and presents the public with what is most important in the Latin American typographic universe.

Tipos Latinos brought 73 works to the MCB, 15 of which by Brazilian designers, selected from the 444 entries ─ 116 projects from Brazil, 83 from Chile and 81 from Argentina. The jury, composed of Ricardo Esteves (Brazil), Diego Aravena (Chile), Fernanda Cozzi (Argentina), Isaías Loaiza (Mexico), Rubén Salinas (Bolivia) and Felipe Calderón (Colombia), met in Bogotá, Colombia, in March 2018, to select the winners, who were part of the exhibition.

In 2018, the New Talents (Emerging) category was included, in which students and professionals with no previous experience in commercial publication of types competed; in addition to subdivisions into six other categories: Text, Title, Manuscripts, Superfamilies, Experimental and Miscellaneous.
According to Tadeu Costa, organizer of the event in São Paulo, the intention was to bring the public closer to the universe of font creators and present the diversity and degree of excellence of Latin American typographic production.
