EXHIBITION | PASSAGES – TRANSITION SPACE TO THE 21ST CENTURY CITY

In 2018, the Museu da Casa Brasileira hosted the exhibition ‘Passagens – Transition Space for the City of the 21st Century’, an international exhibition of the Instituto Cidade em Movimento (IVM) / Institut pour La Ville En Mouvement Vedecom, which dealt with the passages – small spaces of the mobility such as tunnels, staircases, walkways and bridges, which determine the quality of travel on foot through metropolises.

‘Passagens’, which has already been to Paris, Beijing, Barcelona and Buenos Aires, was presented in four areas, each one dealing with different aspects, its concept and historical evolution. Infrastructure barriers that hinder or impede mobility were highlighted; the characteristics of the crossing places such as connection, place and transition; and the results of architectural design competitions promoted by IVM around the world over the past four years.
Some Records Released at the Exhibition
Through an installation on the wall, the visitor was able to “experience” mobility in various urban contexts. A map pointed out IVM’s projects and concrete actions in different parts of the world. In addition to the exhibition, educational activities were programmed, such as debates and presentations, in addition to the exhibition of five short films about ‘passages’ in Africa within the exhibition.

Contests
The challenge proposed in the different IVM competitions within the Passagens program was to establish a connection where none existed, integrating the fragmented city and serving pedestrians, with special attention to the most vulnerable. In Brazil, the IVM carried out studies on the structure and use patterns of passages in Jardim Ângela under various aspects of mobility, culminating in the project competition in early 2017. The winner was also in the exhibition on display at the MCB.
About IVM
Created in 2000, Instituto Cidade em Movimento (IVM) emerges from an iconoclastic, independent and innovative approach to urban mobility. For 18 years, he has been developing international research and actions to contribute to the culture of urban mobility. Its objective is to follow the transformations of urban centers around the world with a focus on the human scale. And involve civil society in this reflection on the city. For this, it focuses on the production of research, publications, exhibitions and seminars open to the public on the quality of public space for mobility, intermodality and the right to information, time and quality of travel.
IVM mobilizes experts in Asia, the Americas and Europe, with research programs and innovative field projects. It brings together public-private partnerships, representatives of the business world and researchers, it brings together academics with actors from social and cultural life, as well as different cities and countries, in the reflection on the dynamics of urban life. Since 2016, IVM has joined VEDECOM, a French institute whose mission is to work towards innovation, research and training applied to transport and responsible mobility, generating activities and jobs.
About MCB
The Museu da Casa Brasileira, an institution of the Secretariat of Culture and Creative Economy of the State of São Paulo that celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2020, is dedicated to the preservation and dissemination of the material culture of the Brazilian house, being the only museum in the country specializing in architecture and design.
