EXHIBITION | LEONARDO FINOTTI: RIVER FRAMED
Credits: Gui Gomes
On display from June 4th to July 31st, 2016.
With a background in architecture and urbanism, Leonardo Finotti has become one of the main Brazilian architecture photographers. His exhibition, held by the Museu da Casa Brasileira, presented 80 previously unpublished works about the city of Rio de Janeiro.
Unlike the usual 2:3 and color format, with which the photographer works most, the photographs in the exhibition were in B&W and square, in dimensions 80 cm x 80 cm. This clipping established a new relationship between Finotti and his collection of images collected in Rio de Janeiro, which began in 2007 and consisted of almost 5,000 photos. His collection is largely characterized by the use of color. In this series, however, the B&W incited new discoveries outside the explicit color pattern, revealing different aspects of the city that we find with this new look.

The desire to pay tribute to Rio de Janeiro came with the city’s 450th anniversary, in 2015, which was strengthened with a new foray by the photographer into modern architecture that is very present in the city. MAM-RJ, by Affonso Reidy, and Casa das Canoas, by Oscar Niemeyer, were some of the projects registered, in addition to natural and urban landscapes. Public and private, interior and exterior make up the objects photographed by Finotti.

The exhibition, a conceptual and immersive photo-installation, allowed the apprehension of each work individually, as well as the appreciation of the strength of the set, expressing the grandeur of the city and its relationship with nature through the interventions of man, especially architecture. The curatorship and exhibition were by Michelle Jean de Castro, and production by Lama.SP.
