EXHIBITION | HUGO FRANCE: CONTRASTED SCALES

On display from August 13th to October 16th, 2016.
The small gets even smaller when it’s next to something big. Showing the striking beauty of the different dimensions is the proposal of the exhibition “Hugo França: Scales in Contrast”, which opened at the Museu da Casa Brasileira on August 13th.
Producing a miniature of each piece made has always been a routine at Atelier Hugo França. Precisely because they are small and extremely similar to the originals, the pieces have always attracted the attention and admiration of those who observe them. It was from this notorious interest and identification that the idea of bringing together these notables as protagonists of an exhibition arose. “For a long time I wanted to bring together the miniatures of my creations for a special occasion. Nothing better than having the Museu da Casa Brasileira as a stage to show them for the first time to the public, who are already very used to seeing my works in large sizes”, commented Hugo França.

In the exhibition, the miniatures shared space with monumental pieces, some identical to the reduced size, installed with the purpose of creating contrasts in dimensions and impacting those who pass through the museum’s corridors and rooms. To complete, there was an exhibition of videos and photos of production processes made throughout the designer’s career. One of the pieces produced by Hugo França comes from a tree in the MCB Garden, which was condemned and was handed over to the artist in the context of the renovation of the Museum’s native species. The piece itself and the record of the stages of work are part of the exhibition. The inauguration of the exhibition “Hugo França: Scales in Contrast” was held together with the inauguration of two other exhibitions: “Design Mirim” and “Projeto Balanço MCB + Boom SP Design”. The event is on the Design Weekend calendar.

The action has already taken place in other places such as Ibirapuera Park (São Paulo) and the Museu do Açude (Rio de Janeiro).

About Hugo France
Hugo França was born in Porto Alegre, in 1954. In search of a life closer to nature, he moved to Trancoso, where he lived for 15 years. There, he realized the degree of waste in the extraction and use of wood, an experience that guided his work. Since the late 1980s, he has been developing “furniture sculptures”, an expression first used by critic Ethel Leon and adopted by the designer for his precision in describing the production he performs from forest and urban waste – trees naturally condemned by the action of bad weather. or by the action of man.
