EXHIBITION | MCB COLLECTION – NEW DONATIONS

For centuries, parts of the domestic sphere have been responsible for clearly materializing the style, artistic currents, history and socioeconomic context of nations. In a country forged in a melting pot of cultures like Brazil, it becomes more than relevant to observe the evolution of its furniture to understand and preserve its history. This is the vocation of the Museu da Casa Brasileira, an institution of the Secretariat of Culture and Creative Economy of the State of São Paulo, which celebrates more than four decades of pioneering in the valorization of national design with an unprecedented display of its collection.
The MCB Collection – New Donations showcases the remodeling of the museum’s collection, consisting of furniture and objects representative of the Brazilian house from the 17th century to the present day, and also displays 87 new pieces recently incorporated into the collection, notably from the modern period Brazilian. Among them are prominent objects in Brazilian design, such as the Jangada Armchair by Jean Gillon, the Concha Lamp by Fábio Alvim, the Oswaldo Bratke chair, and also important winning projects in the history of the Design MCB Award, such as the Mandacaru armchair, by Baba Vacaro , and the Cadê armchair by Ovo Design.

The exhibition also includes a section of images created from the Casas do Brasil project, an MCB initiative created ten years ago and which recovers the memory of the diversity of Brazilian living. Since the beginning of the project, in 2006, different types of Brazilian houses have been registered, such as popular houses from different Brazilian states, gypsy huts, the typology of the hollow Xinguana, riverside dwellings in the Amazon and the solutions made by the inmates of Carandiru to facilitate life in prison.
It is worth mentioning that this significant set is a consequence of the development of the Collection Management Policy, an innovation developed by the current management in conjunction with the Cultural Orientation Committee appointed by the Government of the State of São Paulo. Based on this policy, criteria were created for the development of the collection. Thus, the Museu da Casa Brasileira comes, among other actions, strengthening relationships with collectors, gallery owners and design companies. In a collaborative manner with professionals in the sector, the team of experts in art, architecture and design that integrates the MCB has been contributing to the development of the collection’s identity.

Pioneer collection
The MCB collection continues, from this significant expansion, incorporating relevant pieces from various phases of Brazilian design; at this time with a main focus on the modernist period (covering the 1950s and 1960s), essential to understand the development of the national design identity.
Unlike the production of furniture and objects that had been seeking inspiration and technical solutions in the European tradition, such as the Louis XV style, the modernist period was the crucial moment for the construction of the identity of Brazilian design and the search for forms, materials and concepts that would make sense for the very diverse way of living in the country and to follow the protagonism assumed by architecture in the national and international context at that time. Investigating and valuing Brazilian production from this period is part of MCB’s pioneering mission for the inventory, research, dissemination and promotion of national design.
After reviewing its origin and constitution of the collection *, today the Museum establishes the bases of its first Collection Management Policy, officially incorporating into its constitutive scope issues of valuation and inclusion of objects linked to the cultural universe of design. It starts to consider the field of design as everyday culture and fulfills its role of prospective and retrospective representation of Brazilian culture.

About MCB
The Museu da Casa Brasileira, an institution of the Secretariat of Culture and Creative Economy of the State of São Paulo that celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2020, is dedicated to the preservation and diffusion of the material culture of the Brazilian house, being the only museum in the country specialized in architecture and design. The MCB’s program includes temporary and long-term exhibitions, with an agenda that also includes educational service activities, debates, lectures and publications contextualizing the museum’s vocation for the formation of critical thinking on topics such as architecture, urbanism, housing, economics creativity, urban mobility and sustainability.
