Exhibition | CADEIRA FIRMEZA
The Museu da Casa Brasileira, an institution of the Secretary of Culture of the State of São Paulo, in partnership with CIAM – Centro Israelita de Apoio Multidisciplinar, inaugurates the exhibition ‘Cadeira Firmeza’ on December 2nd, Saturday, at 10am, with free admission.
In honor of the International Day of People with Disabilities, celebrated on December 3, the exhibition will highlight the ‘positioning chair in cardboard’, developed by CIAM’s Low Cost Assistive Technology Laboratory, a space dedicated to the elaboration and adaptation of postural devices.
“We know that children with motor and neurological impairment, whether or not they are associated with intellectual disability, are entitled to the provision of a state-of-the-art wheelchair via the public sector. However, this demand is large and the time between evaluation and delivery in some regions of the country can take up to five years. It is enough time for them to acquire irreversible musculoskeletal deformities that, if not taken care of, can lead to death through development “, explains João Marcelo Paixão Turri, Administrative Technical Assistant of CIAM’s Technical Department.
Taking as reference the work of the North American Molly Campbell and Alex Trusdell, founder of the Adaptative Design Association Inc., in the creation of devices of assistance for people with disabilities, spread in South America by the occupational therapist Ayola Cuesta Palacios, occurred beginning in 2012, the development of the ‘positioning chair in cardboard’ by CIAM.
This chair is a personalized postural device, created from a specific evaluation and respecting the biotype, the motor and neurological framework of the child (0 to 4 years). The user is benefited in aspects such as: development optimization with health / illness balance, through the physical and maturational aspect of the pulmonary system; increased repertoire of visual and auditory communicative stimuli; improvement in motor development in relation to trunk and cervical control; and coordination of upper limbs, provided by postural correction; besides social gain, with their inclusion in the family and the inclusion of the family in the community.
The devices are delivered to households for use at home, day care and educational settings, followed by professional guidance on day-to-day use, care and precautions. Until October 2017, more than 340 children benefited from the positioning chairs in cardboard.
The ‘Cadeira Firmeza’ show will be on display until January 21, 2018 and will also feature selected pieces in several editions of the MCB Design Award that promote improvements in the quality of life and inclusion of the disabled person.
About Israel Center for Multidisciplinary Support – CIAM
A non-profit charitable association, 58 years ago CIAM’s mission is to provide assistance to people with intellectual disabilities and their families, seeking to develop their trust, autonomy and inclusion in society. Among the main technical objectives of the institution are the assistance to the person with intellectual disability and his family; the promotion of the social and professional integration of its assistants; and the search for technical recognition in the development of the disabled person. The institution has the Jaguaré unit, which provides social assistance, early intervention and free care to infants, children and young people (0 to 14 years) and their families. In 2016, more than 8,200 attendances were performed and 92 positioning chairs were distributed. It also has the Village of Hope unit, located in Franco da Rocha, an individualized assisted living project for people with intellectual disabilities inspired by the experience of Kibbutz Kfar Tikva (Haifa-Israel). It currently has 43 residents.
About the MCB Design Award
The MCB Design Prize has been held since 1986 by the Brazilian House Museum. The award – the most traditional and prestigious of the segment in the country – reveals talents and dedicates professionals and companies. The Prize is divided into two main moments: the Poster Contest and then the award of the products and written works. Between June and August, the MCB receives creations (prototypes or in production) in the categories: Construction, Transportation, Electronics, Lighting, Furniture, Textiles, Utensils and Written Works. The works are analyzed by two independent judging commissions, one for the product categories and the other for theoretical work. Finally, the winners are chosen, divided between 1st, 2nd and 3rd places and honorable mentions, besides the selected ones that also make up the exhibition. As a result of the MCB Design Prize, the Museum holds a show with winners and selected from each category of the edition, which is on display for about two months.
