Aniversário do MCB – 48 anos

The Museu da Casa Brasileira (MCB), an institution of the São Paulo State Secretariat of Culture, celebrates its 48th anniversary on May 29th, with free special programming. The activities begin at 10:00 am and extend to the day, with a silkscreen shop on the sidewalk, a lecture with the curators of the exhibition Aerodynamic Design – Metaphor of the Future and a special visit with Wilton Guerra, Museum Preservation, Research and Documentation Manager.

Conceived by the then Secretary of Treasury of the State of São Paulo, Arrobas Martins, MCB was created on May 29, 1970, with the denomination of Brazilian Historical and Artistic Furniture Museum. In October of the same year, the first Board of Directors of the Museum was established, which, after discussing and analyzing its objectives, became the denomination that accompanies it until today – Museu da Casa Brasileira.

In 1972, the Museum’s headquarters moved to the Solar Fábio Prado, a neoclassical mansion built between 1942 and 1945 to house the residence of the former mayor of São Paulo (1934-1938), Fábio da Silva Prado, and his wife Renata Crespi Prado. The couple lived in the residence for 18 years and turned it into a place of great official receptions. With the death of Fábio Prado, without heirs, Renata Crespi eventually left the house and, in 1968, transferred her ownership to the Padre Anchieta Foundation, which, in turn, ceded the building in lending to the Secretary of State for Culture to house the newly -created Brazilian House Museum.

Currently, MCB is dedicated to the preservation and diffusion of the material culture of the Brazilian house, being the only museum in the country specialized in architecture and design. In addition, since 1986 holds the Design Award, the main award of the segment in the country.

To celebrate its 48th anniversary, the MCB will offer free activities, such as the ‘A Casa Estampada’ sidewalk workshop with the artist Monica Schoenacker, where the participant will learn about screen printing and win a dishcloth with an illustration of the Museum, specially designed for the occasion.

In addition to checking the exhibits, visitors will be able to attend the lecture of the exhibition Aerodynamic Design – Metaphor of the Future, which presents more than 250 significant objects of the streamline style, with curator Patricia Fonseca and collector Giacomo Favretto.

For those interested in learning more about the history, curiosities and collection of the Museu da Casa Brasileira, MCB’s Research and Documentation Preservation Manager, Wilton Guerra, will make a guided tour of the premises of the institution. To participate, it is necessary to register by e-mail: agendamento@mcb.org.br. Limited vacancies.
