VIRTUAL TALK WHEEL MCB + ARQXP | DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGY: PROGRAMMED OBSOLESCENCE, PRODUCT LIFE CYCLE AND DISPOSAL

On October 19 (Tuesday), the Museu da Casa Brasileira – an institution of the Secretariat of Culture and Creative Economy of the State of São Paulo – and ArqXP will promote a virtual debate on the theme “Design and technology: programmed obsolescence, product lifecycle and disposal”.
The programming will take place live on MCB’s YouTube – from 5 pm – and will feature the participation of Lia Assumpção (janelaestudio), Valkiria Pedri Fialkowski (ARBO Design) and mediation by Gustavo Curcio (ArqXP). The discussion will revolve around the question: to what extent is the designer, in fact, responsible for the choice of materials, life cycle and disposal when designing electronic equipment?
The roundtable will also address the concept of the Internet of Things (IoT), product design, digital integration of equipment, connectivity, sustainable behavior and programmed obsolescence from the perspective of two designers working in the market and researchers the interfaces between technology, data usage and responsible disposal of electronic products.
About Lia Assumpção
Designer graduated from FAAP and Accademia Italiana de Moda e Design in Florence, Italy, and Master in Architecture and Design from FAU-USP. In addition to having been her object of research in her master’s degree, planned obsolescence — and related themes, such as consumerism and conscious consumption — was also the subject of the column she kept between 2019 and 2020 on the Ecoa/Uol website. She develops editorial, visual identity and signage projects through windowestudio, of which she has been a partner since 2006. Among her recent works are the exhibition “Democracy: Yona Friedman” at the Museum of Resistance in São Paulo, the book “Vânia Mignone” , which brings together the works of the plastic artist (Triângulo and Pinã art and culture) and the exhibition “Levantes” (Sesc Pompeia).
About Valkiria Pedri Fialkowski
PhD student and master in design from UFPR, MBA in Marketing from FGV, researcher in the areas of Design management, sustainability and data-driven design. She is a founding partner of the company ARBO Design, where she works on innovation and strategic design projects. Along with its clients, it has received more than 50 design awards, such as the IF Design Award, the Bienal Iberoamericana de Diseño, the Museu da Casa Brasileira and the Brasil Design Award, in addition to obtaining 30 patents and registrations with the INPI and international bodies. She has worked for over 20 years as a design consultant and manager in interdisciplinary teams, collaborating on projects for local and global clients such as Midea, Toshiba and Discovery Channel. She has also collaborated with companies such as Electrolux and Busscar Ônibus. She participates in the jury of the 34th MCB Design Award.
About Gustavo Curcio (Mediator)
Architect (2006), Master (2009) and Doctor (2015) in Design and Architecture, Gustavo Curcio has 15 years of experience in publishing, visual programming, art direction, photography direction and editorial/advertising direction. He develops research at the undergraduate and graduate level at the Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism at the University of São Paulo in the area of Magazine Design, Graphic Editorial Project (online and offline). He holds a postdoctoral degree in Design and Architecture from the Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism. Gustavo is a professor and researcher at the Project Department at the University’s Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism. He was a graphic designer, art editor, photography editor, art director and editorial director at Editora Abril, at RMC Editora (branded content), Magu Comunicação Integrada and Content XP Comunicação. Elaborated the graphic and editorial projects of Jornal Diário de São Paulo (2011), Yearbook of the Government of the State of São Paulo (2010), AnaMaria and Minha Casa Magazines (2004 to 2010), Avon Cosmetics, Scania Latin America, SAAB and Toyota. He developed packaging projects for Fischer Brasil (German multinational). He is on the editorial board of the magazines Arquitetura e Urbanismo (ISSN 0102-8979) and Téchne (ISSN 0104-1053). He is part of ArqXP’s scientific council | Innovative Experiences in Construction. He developed digital architecture for applications (apps), websites and electronic platforms, as well as videos and animations for Glebba Investimentos, Scania Latin America, BTB Telecom, among other companies. He is the author of the following books: História Revista (Aner, 2011), Wood: raw material for Design (Senai, 2014), Antonio De Mitry: in practice, theory is another (Senai, 2014) and Sandra Fóz Décor Tables ( MAGU, 2015).
