The show, which celebrated the bicentennial of Brazil’s independence in 2022, will pass through stations on Line 4 – Yellow
The Museu da Casa Brasileira, an institution managed by the Padre Anchieta Foundation, and ViaQuatro, the concessionaire responsible for the operation and maintenance of Line 4 – Yellow of the Metro, take passengers to an excerpt from the exhibition ‘Independencias: houses and customs in Brazil’. At Vila Sônia Station, the posters will be on display until January 31st and will go to São Paulo-Morumbi station in April.
The Museu da Casa Brasileira, an institution managed by the Fundação Padre Anchieta, and ViaQuatro, the concessionaire responsible for the operation and maintenance of Line 4 – Yellow of the Metro, take passengers to an excerpt from the exhibition ‘Independencias: houses and customs in Brazil’. At Vila Sônia Station, the posters will be on display until January 31st and will go to São Paulo-Morumbi station in April.
The exhibition presents a profile of Brazilian material culture to Metro users, together with records of the different architectures linked to the three cultural matrices that constitute the basis of our sociocultural formation: that of the Portuguese colonizers, that of the Africans and that of the indigenous people.
In the images displayed at the stations, it is possible to understand what was in each exhibition room of the Museum, and through the QRCode available, access the videos of the parallel programming, as well as the timeline that focuses on social movements made invisible by the narratives of the official historiography : conflicts and revolts involving indigenous peoples, the Afro-descendant population, women and the popular strata as a whole.
“The show is an opportunity to get to know a little about the history of the origins of the design of Brazilian cultural materiality, its variety of ways of living, dressing and building objects that mirror the multiple social identities linked to the period of struggles for independence in the country. , from the end of the 18th century until the abolition of slavery in 1888”, comments Giancarlo Latorraca, technical director of the MCB.
The exposure
Organized in the context of the launch of the IndependênciaS series on TV Cultura, the show proposed a relationship between furniture, objects and artifacts, with clothes and apparel selected from the costumes produced for the recording of the episodes. A selection that ranges from the characteristic clothes of the imperial court – created by stylist Alexandre Herchcovitch -, to those of the different ethnic groups arrived by the slave trade, created by researcher and costume designer Jennifer Ramos dos Santos, passing through the set of pieces and clothing of the native peoples .
The content of the exhibition was organized by Giancarlo Latorraca, technical director of the MCB, in dialogue with the technical teams of the Museum, with the curatorial participation of the historian specialist in the History of Slavery and Race Relations in the Americas Ynaê Lopes, for the Afro-Brazilian module , and writer, environmentalist and translator Kaká Werá Jecupé for the module on native peoples; both also worked as critical reviewers of the script for the TV Cultura series.
