The Museu da Casa Brasileira, an institution of the Secretary of Culture and Creative Economy of the State of São Paulo, celebrates its 50th anniversary. To celebrate the fiftieth anniversary, the MCB – which remains closed under the guidance of the Covid-19 Contingency Center – invites the public to continue being part of this story that can be followed up virtually until the end of 2020.
The celebration begins with the #MCB50anos campaign, which aims to bring together, on social networks, the experiences, emotions and bonds of the public with their own home, their experiences and memories of living with the institution or inviting them to talk about the role of the Museu da Casa Brasileira in preserving and disseminating the materiality of the house through architecture and design.
Gilberto Gil, singer and composer, is one of the first figures who participates in the campaign with a video in which he talks about the love that exists in the home, especially in this moment of recollection. Gil also comments on the work that the MCB does in keeping memories of Brazilian houses.
“The collection of spontaneous testimonies will be very important for the composition of the MCB’s virtual collection; and being able to count on the participation in the campaign of the visitors and personalities that are part of our history makes us very honored. We are celebrating this moment virtually, until we can reopen to the public and celebrate in person ”, says Miriam Lerner, general director of the Museu da Casa Brasileira.
Whoever wants to participate in the campaign will be able to record a video of approximately one minute and post it on social networks with # MCB50anos. Or send it to the email comunicacao@mcb.org.br.
Future
The MCB remains temporarily closed due to the coronavirus pandemic, but his team continues to work from home so that the reopening happens with an even more diverse schedule.
Three temporary exhibitions that were already prepared will be inaugurated. “We will open‘ Fields of Altitude ’by photographer Kitty Paranaguá’ which brings a special feature on how to live in the hills of Rio de Janeiro; ‘Casas do Brasil: Conexões Paulistanas’ curated by graphic designer Didiana Prata, who presents an extensive documentation of the houses of the middle class in São Paulo made by photographer Marcos Freire between the years 2002 and 2014, as well as the Ecological Urbanism exhibition, in partnership with Harvard University Graduate School of Design ”, reports Giancarlo Latorraca, technical director of MCB.
History
Created in 1970, the MCB is located on Avenida Brigadeiro Faria Lima, in a manor built between 1942 and 1945 and which belonged to Fábio Prado, former mayor of the city of São Paulo, and his wife, Renata Crespi.
MCB is the only one in the country specializing in architecture and design and has a program that includes important temporary and long-term exhibitions, in addition to educational activities, debates, lectures, book launches, musical presentations and fairs.
The Museu da Casa Brasileira also stands out for initiatives such as the Design Award, the main segment award in the country, held since 1986; and the Casas do Brasil project that rescues and preserves the memory of the diversity of living.
While the MCB is temporarily closed, the public can check the contents of the Museu da Casa Brasileira on digital platforms, which have daily updates.
