The workshop ‘What object is this?’ of January 16th, 2021 investigated the chair
It is very likely that when reading this text, you are sitting in a chair!
It is said that it was invented as an offshoot of the bench, gaining support for the back and arms in ancient Egypt. In Brazil, it was brought by the Portuguese, adding to the mats and hammocks of the original peoples as a way to accommodate and organize the body.
A design classic, the chairs continue to be created, transformed and adapted, with legs, fabrics, fine woods, metal, plastic, often gaining the status of art, symbolizing power and – at the same time – being part, nowadays, of a large part of the dwelling, gathering, dwelling of people.
