Exhibition | Peconheiros
Visitation until October 21th
To present the work developed by The Spirit of Poland in partnership with the design studio for sports ‘We design for Physical Culture’ in the community of Boa Vista do Acará, in the Amazon, the Museum of the Brazilian House, institution of the Secretary of Culture of the State, managed by Civil Society through the House of Brazilian Arts and Artifacts, inaugurates on September 11, Tuesday, at 7 pm, with free admission, the exhibition ‘Peconheiros’. On the occasion, visitors will also be able to participate in a guided tour with Monika Brauntsch, Dorota Kabala and Carolina Menezes, designers who participated in the project.
The new show, which has been at the Gdynia Design Days 2017 (Poland) festival, presents the project and solutions aimed at increasing the safety and comfort of the açaí collectors (so-called peconers) in the rise of the palm trees, which measure around 15 meters high. Traditionally, these professionals raised their feet to harvest food for their families, but today, with the increase in commercial demand for fruit, the daily activity of these professionals also increased, and with this, the difficult working conditions and the fatigue result in more frequent accidents.
The peconeros usually climb unprotected açai trees, with a machete fitted in the shorts or between the teeth and a palm leaf or bag rolled in the feet and requires special skills of balance, with centralized support in the feet and hands free for handling the machete. In some cases they also use the peconha, the foot strap used by the collectors in a rudimentary harvesting process.
The work of the designers and the entire team was aimed at improving the safety conditions of workers, through equipment that respects the local context and the skills of professionals on a daily basis. “During our work in Boa Vista, we tried to apply practical solutions from climbing, arboriculture and sports design, while working with local materials and techniques. This was crucial to enable the popularization of the solutions created, “says Dorota Kabala, from We Design for Physical Culture.
The Museu da Casa Brasileira, an institution of the São Paulo State Department of Culture, is dedicated to the preservation and diffusion of the material culture of the Brazilian house, being the only museum in the country that specializes in architecture and design.
