The Museu da Casa Brasileira, an institution of the Secretariat of Culture and Creative Economy of the State of São Paulo, joins FAUUSP for the development of the last Brazilian stage of the worldwide campaign Design for Emergency, entitled Desafio Internacional Semeando Ideias. Project applications will be accepted between June 15 and July 15, 2020.
What brings us together and what draws us away in this current world context? What are the local situations that are also global in this journey? Considering these and other issues, Design for Emergency brings together the survey of simultaneous initiatives, in several countries, which aim to reflect on how design can help to face the emergence of COVID-19. The project was launched by the Center for Design at Northeastern University, located in Boston, under the leadership of Professors Sara Colombo and Paolo Ciucarelli. The Brazilian version is coordinated by Denise Dantas, leader of the Design in Action Research Group at the Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism of the University of São Paulo (FAUUSP) and has the Museu da Casa Brasileira in its final stage – Desafio Internacional Semeando Ideias.
The contest aims to engage designers to propose shared solutions on an open platform, which can be implemented by local entrepreneurs in any country, under Creative Commons license. Proposals can address problems, needs and emotions of people living in isolation and following measures of social distance. As the situation of the pandemic changes, products or services that address the new problems that emerge in the “new normal” will also be welcome.
The first Brazilian stage submitted a questionnaire on the website Design for Emergency between April 15 and May 29. In all, more than 2,000 people from all regions of Brazil participated in the research, reporting their experiences during the period of isolation and social distance imposed by the Coronavirus. The results aim to understand fears, problems and hopes, in addition to exploring how habits are changing right now. These data can be viewed through infographics and become useful information for the development of new design solutions that meet these needs. International results of the project are also available.
Even though it is a global challenge, the Brazilian version of Semeando Ideias encourages works that consider the specificities of developing countries, whose situations of more diverse vulnerabilities can be minimized through social impact design solutions. Semeando Ideias is looking for contributions that consider a broad social reach, that serve not only people who already consume design in their daily lives. The belief that there is a lot of similarity in local situations in other developing countries, both in Latin America and around the world, moves the idea that the sharing of proposals of a social nature can surely be replicated in several realities.
Semeando Ideias believes in a democratic, accessible, sustainable design, aimed at citizenship and improving the quality of life of the population. “The Museu da Casa Brasileira, in this context and delicate moment in which we are inserted, believes in design as an important tool for reflection and proposing ideas. This year, when we will not have the 34th Design Award, we value the field by working together with the FAUUSP research group, inviting professionals and students to participate in the challenge and to move proposals in line with the current global reality ”, comments Miriam Lerner , director general of MCB.
